Key Features
  • The Sportsmatic Line: The **Seiko Sportsmatic** series was a hugely popular and robust line of automatic watches launched in the early 1960s. It was designed to offer reliable self-winding movements to the mass market, building upon the foundations laid by earlier automatic models.
  • The 7625 Caliber: The watch is powered by the **Seiko Caliber 7625**, a widely used 17-jewel automatic movement known for its simplicity and durability. This movement operated at **18,000 vibrations per hour (vph)** and included a date complication.
  • The ""Calendar 820"" Designation: The ""Calendar 820"" designation often referred to the specific design or case code within the Sportsmatic series, indicating a model variant with a date function. The reference **7625-8961** adheres to the classic, clean, and practical mid-1960s aesthetic.
  • Semi-Quickset Date: The 7625 caliber typically featured a **semi-quickset date** function, where the date could be advanced by moving the hands back and forth between roughly 9 PM and 1 AM. This was a common method before the advent of full quickset systems.
  • Historical Context (1965): The production year **1965** places this watch at the peak of the Sportsmatic line's popularity, right before the global dominance of the *Seiko 5* series. It represents Seiko's excellence in high-volume production of reliable, high-value automatic watches.
